Just to be sure there was no difference I tried the first iso_test.dxf with LibreCAD 2.1. iso_test_freedraft_bereinigt.dxf This one LibreCAD 2.2.0 rc2-1 was inclined to open. Yes! I deleted the empty layers and saved it in Freedraft. I tried with NanoCAD5, yes! And I tried with Freedraft, an older simple free app. 'Please test its existence and permissions'. iso_test.dxf LibreCAD 2.2.0 rc2-1 (the latest) wouldn't open it. This did the job, it produced some 256 layers, the black lines on layer 0, the grey lines on layer 253.

Over that it's a hassle to install the 32-bit only binary on Linux 64-bit, and I don't do much 2D drafting at home anymore, so I decided LibreCAD would be sufficient for my use. As for myself I read DraftSight's EULA and didn't care much for it. Plus you'll be surprise to see how it resembles AutoCAD 2002 in its features and GUI. DraftSight is not open source, but it is free for personal use.

The whole of FreeCAD is a W.I.P., but as far as I know no one is currently working on full DXF implementation. If you want to import simple shapes in DXF and then do something with them in FreeCAD, you can, but if you want to seriously work with DXF with full functionality you would, for now at least, be best to have a look at LibreCAD for DXF or Draftsight for both DXF and DWG. Another example that has come up in the past is the other application had somehow inserted several lines on top of each other, hence the shape failed in FreeCAD.ĭXF files are certainly problematic, FreeCAD can import some DXF, but it has limitations. For example, precision, sometimes a shape fails because the different lines are not actually going to exactly the same point. Sometimes, some of the problem is that FreeCAD is actually showing up a problem not showing up in other applications.
